A 3 days Regional Media Election Training has started in Honiara.

Organised by the Pacific Media Assistance Scheme, PACMAS, the training aims to improve regional reporters understanding of the political and electoral system.

It is also to improve their understanding of the overall electoral process, familiarise reporters with legal and electoral guidelines.

The training is also to provide analysis in their reports on issues related to elections.

Speaking during the Workshop opening this morning, PACMAS Program Manager, Francis Herman says, the complexities of electoral systems require journalists covering the event to be well versed with the processes, issues, statistical data and personalities involved.

He says the training places emphasis on the role of the media in election coverage.

Mr Herman adds, it is also an opportunity for PACMAS to listen to country representatives- their specific needs and challenges when it comes to election coverage.

SIBC News understands, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Fiji are heading to the polls later this year.
