BRAITHWAITE GIVEN HONOUR TO OPEN BANANA FESTIVAL

Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) Special Coordinator, Justine Braithwaite was given the honour to officially open the Banana Festival at Kirakira, Makira Ulawa Province yesterday.

Ms Braithwaite in her keynote address mentioned the importance of Banana, saying it is a key source of nutrition and food security as well as have important medicinal properties.

She said, too often in this day and age traditional foods are overlooked, but she thanked the Makira people for the idea of holding the festival to promote and preserve the fruit and its various uses.

The RAMSI Special Coordinator said another aspect of the festival is to promote tourism.

She adds, visitors from abroad as well as within Solomon Islands are looking for such unique experiences in an unspoiled and magnificent Pacific environment.

The Banana Festival continues today.
