The Central Market in Honiara must be upgraded to model a health marketplace, says the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, Dr Lester Ross.

Dr Ross made the statement during the launch of the Healthy Central Market project this week.

The Permanent Secretary said the Honiara Central Market must be upgraded to a model healthy marketplace for the whole of Solomon Islands.

Doctor Lester Ross says, the first step is to ban the sale and use of tobacco, betel nut and alcohol in Honiara Central Market adding, the smoke ban is part of the “NO SMOK-Solomon Islands” campaign launched last year.

This is inline with the Tobacco Free Pacific campaign 2025.

The project is also expected to create a new friendly market atmosphere, where everybody has a sense of belonging and ownership, and a place that promotes ecological balance, upholds dignity, and promotes leisure and learning.

This project belongs to the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and Honiara City Council – supported by the World Health Organisation.
