DRIFTING VESSEL BIRTHED SAFELY AT MANIKALAKU, MARAU

Passengers and crew of MV Freedom, which had drifted since 1pm yesterday while on a return trip to Honiara, have arrived safely at Marau Sound, in Northeast Guadalcanal today.

The vessel had drifted on its way back to Honiara from Makira Ulawa Province after encountering a mechanical problem.

Confirming the people’s safe landing at Marau Sound to SIBC News today, a Patrick Haukare says all nine people onboard were safe and sound.

“As we speak all the passengers and crew are all safe. No one was hurt or bruised from any accident. All are safe and well and the vessel is currently birthing at Manikalaku, Marau station.”

Patrick Haukare also said, the Solomon Islands Maritime Search and Rescue Centre were alerted of the incident after two people from the vessel managed to get ashore to Marau Sound, in a boat powered by a 5-horsepower outboard motor engine.

SIBC News understands, MV Freedom is currently berthing at Manikalaku, Marau station.
