FSII QUESTIONS WHY WEST PAPUA WAS NOT IN THE SI SPEECH TO UNGA

Forum Solomon Islands International has questioned why West Papua’s struggle for self- determination was not in the Deputy Prime Minister’s speech to the 68th United Nations General Assembly Meeting in New York.

Forum Solomon Islands International has questioned why West Papua’s struggle for self- determination was not in the Deputy Prime Minister’s speech to the 68th United Nations General Assembly Meeting in New York.

In a press release, F-S-I-I President, Redley Raramo said the omission of West Papua’s struggle for independence indicates Solomon Islands support for Indonesia’s continuous iron fist ruling over West Papua.

Raramo said F-S-I-I had questioned the government’s stand over the West Papua issue and the government decided to respond not only to F-S-I-I but to the whole world that it has no say over this matter.

Raramo said it is clear that government supports Indonesia’s dominance of West Papua and it also supports the seemingly endless human atrocities taking place there.

He said the Deputy Prime Minister’s speech stated that Solomon Islands is strongly against human rights abuses, but then swept the issue of West Papua’s struggle for self- determination under the carpet.

He said this is double standard at its best.
