The caretaker government has named its candidate for Prime Minister ahead of the nomination deadline this afternoon that will punctuate a week of political turbulence.

Member of Parliament for Small Malaita Rick Houenipwela will be the candidate for the caretaker government coalition. The coalition includes the two political parties that formerly made up the Opposition and members of three political parties in the former ruling government.

The Honiara Hotel camp has not confirmed its candidate for Prime Minister.

The nomination period for the new Prime Minister opened on Wednesday, and nomination papers will be accepted at Government House until 4 p.m. today. Members of Parliament will elect a new Prime Minister next Wednesday.

Acting Governor General of Solomon Islands Ajilon Nasiu is expected to submit a list specifying all nominated candidates and their respective nominators to each Member of Parliament prior to the election meeting.

According to the Government Communication Unit, all members are eligible for candidature and no member can be a candidate unless he or she is nominated by four other members. No member may nominate more than one candidate, and any candidate may withdraw his or her candidature at any time before the conclusion of the election.
