Health ministry to boost provincial mental health services

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is planning to establish a mental health facility in each of the country’s nine provinces.

Minister of Health and Medical Services Dr Kaitu’u Angikimua revealed the plan in Parliament last week.

He was responding to Opposition Leader and Member of Parliament for East Malaita Manasseh Maelanga’s concerns over the rising number of people with mental health issues in Solomon Islands.

The fact that many people across the country suffer from mental illness is a concern for the health ministry, Minister Angikimua said.

He said introducing provincial mental health care units is one way in which the ministry aims to improve mental health services.
