The Honiara Central Market will close for an indefinite period as of today.

A media statement from the HCC media unit says the reason behind the closure is to give time for major improvements to be carried out.

Market Master Saxon Ofata says they have seen the need for improvements to provide a better environment at the market, saying these include renovations, fencing, improving water and sanitation and re-organising the market.

Ofata says this exercise will affect the vendors and the public but urge them to be patient.

He says the initiative is taken by the Council to improve the market for the betterment of the public, vendors and the Council.

Meanwhile the market master has asked all the vendors to vacate the market premises and to remove all their properties.

Ofata further states that the re-opening of the market will be announced after the completion of the renovation work.
