Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has described the late Sir George Lepping GCMG, KstJ, MBE as a meritorious statesman and commended the people of Pirumeri in the Shortland Islands for the service he rendered to the State.
The Prime Minister made the remarks while paying tribute to the Late Sir George during a state funeral at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Honiara, yesterday.
The Late Sir George a devout Catholic died at his residence in Honiara last Wednesday after a long illness.
He served as the second Governor-General of Solomon Islands from 7th July 1988 to 6th July 1994.
Speaking at the state funeral, Mr. Prime Minister Sogavare said the Late Sir George was the country’s second Governor General, a position reserved only for locals with admirable integrity and merit.
“The late Sir George Lepping Gerea was Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance when he was elected as the country’s Governor-General, a position in our society that we reserve only for locals with admirable integrity and merit. His elevation to this high office speaks volume of his quality. He was a man of integrity, a meritorious statesman.”
The Prime Minister said the late Sir George’s service to the Government of Solomon Islands was his peoples’ contribution to the nation.
SIBC News understands Deputy Prime Minister Douglas Ete, is representing the Government at the late Sir George Lepping’s burial at his final resting place in the Shortland Islands.
