Minutes after the alleged rape of an 8-year-old girl in the Ogou community of East Kwaio, Malaita Province on Wednesday, police arrested a suspect in the case.
Provincial Police Commander for Malaita Province Timothy Apaesi said the suspect, 22, was arrested about 30 minutes after the incident.
The suspect is now in police custody, and the Sexual Assault Team of the police force is involved in the matter.
The rape allegedly occurred during a sports tournament in the Ogou area.
The victim was taken to Atoifi Hospital for a medical examination after the incident and was later transported by plane to the National Referral Hospital in Honiara.
John Safanamae, an elder from East Kwaio, has condemned the alleged rape.
Mr Safanamae said the government should take more action against sexual crimes as perpetrators are increasingly taking advantage of the most vulnerable members of society.
“The laws of the country should be tougher,” Mr Safanamae said. “Very high-level cases should be strictly punished so that people feel the consequences of their actions.”
