MPs TO ELECT NEW PRIME MINISTER TOMORROW

The newly elected members of the 10th Parliament will convene for the election of the country’s Prime Minister tomorrow, 9th December.

The Governor General Sir Frank Ofagioro Kabui has declared Tuesday 9th December to elect Solomon Islands 12th Prime Minister.

Sir Frank had issued a notice to all newly elected MPs that by virtue of section 33 (1) of the Constitution and schedule 2 of the Constitution, the Governor General shall convene a meeting purposely to administer the process of electing the incoming Prime Minister.

Nominations opened 8:00 am last Tuesday and closed at 4:00pm Friday 5th December.

At the close of nominations at 4pm last Friday, the Governor-General has received two nominations.

These are Manasseh Damukana Sogavare, the Democratic Coalition for Change candidate and Jeremiah Manele endorsed by the Solomon Islands Democratic Coalition.

In terms of withdrawals, any of the two candidate may withdraw his candidature at any time before the conclusion of the election.
