As the National Referral Hospital is only metres above sea level, officials predict that a big swell could easily sweep through the facility.
NRH Chief Executive Officer Dr Steve Aumanu said the hospital’s position 1.5 to 2 metres above the mean sea level could have implications on services.
“The situation of the hospital for provision of safe and quality care has been threatened,” Dr Aumanu said.
The hospital is near the Mataniko River and seaside settlements, which makes it extremely vulnerable to several natural hazards, he said.
Dr Aumanu raised the issue during Prime Minister Rick Houenipwela’s recent visit to wards and the new morgue at the hospital.
Plans to relocate the hospital are underway.
