New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully announces, New Zealand will assist Solomon Islands to ease transport challenges after vital infrastructure was damaged in the flooding.

Minister McCully says a portable bridge will be provided to the Solomon Islands government to help maintain the critical link between the airport and Honiara’s city centre.

He emphasize, New Zealand has committed to purchasing, shipping and installing a replacement bridge at the location where the Old Matanikau Bridge was washed away.

Mr McCully says, the benefits of this kind of bridge are that they are strong, but quick to assemble and install.

He explain, they are the same kind used for emergency situations in New Zealand.

The New Zealand Foreign Minister says, the bridge will ensure traffic flow around Honiara as repair work is undertaken on the main Matanikau Bridge.

It will also provide an alternative access point when the Matanikau Bridge is upgraded in 2015.
