Guadalcanal Premier Stephen Panga has condemned the National Government’s plans to expand Honiara city vertically saying it is contradicting its own decentralisation policy to develop the provincial centres.

The papers reported last week, the Government is planning to expand the Honiara city boundary with taller building.

In his response, Mr Panga says it will make more sense for the Government to concentrate on developing the provincial centres in preparation for the federal system of Government.

“To expand the Honiara City Boundary upwards, is a big joke and massive contradiction on the government’s intention to decentralise and create development centres in our provinces. At the same time I’d like to advise the government that it would be common sense to develop other centres and townships as preparations for a federal system, which means that our provincial centres needs to be developed into towns,” said Premier Panga.

The Premier reiterates, the people of Guadalcanal will not allow further expansion of Honiara City into their land.
