The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), European Union and the Government have jointly hosted a national youth debate on deep sea minerals.

The SPC initiative is to increase public awareness on issues relating to deep seabed minerals in Solomon Islands.

The debate featured 14 youths from nine high schools in Honiara.

SPC Deep Sea Minerals Project Team Leader, Akuila Tawake, says, the debate aims to encourage young people and students to research and gain in-depth knowledge on deep sea minerals.

It also aims to encouraging a participatory approach whereby all stakeholders can frankly exchange views on various issues relating to deep sea minerals.

Meanwhile, EU Ambassador to Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, Leonidas Tezapsidis hopes, the debate will help Government and the people of Solomon Islands reach a collective informed decision on an issue that will influence future generations.
