The Temotu Provincial Government and the National Government have developed a shelter strategy to address housing needs of people left homeless by last year’s earthquake and tsunami disaster in Temotu.

Director of Architecture and Building Division for the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Patterson Fakavai said the strategy looks at rebuilding and repairing eligible houses that were completely or partially destroyed during the disaster.

Mr Fakavai adds the strategy also aims to reduce future risk from earthquakes, tsunamis, cyclones, flooding and climate change by helping make sure houses are designed to be more disaster-resilient.

The strategy proposal was endorsed by the Temotu Provincial Government, the Ministry of Disaster Management, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development and the Ministry of Development Planning and Aid Coordination.
