The biennial Small Malaita Yam Cultural Festival has been confirmed for next year.
Prime Minister Rick Houenipwela announced plans for the festival after meeting with landowning representatives from Pululaha cultural centre, the venue of the Yam Cultural Festival, during his current tour of the Small Malaita Constituency.
The Malaita Provincial Government requested that the festival be moved from July to August as it plans to hold its Second Appointed Day celebrations in Afio next year.
Prime Minister Houenipwela said the organisers of the Melanesian Spearhead Group want the Yam Cultural Festival to take place in July, around the time the country will host the 6th Melanesian Festival of Arts and Culture in Honiara.
The Prime Minister said he will bring the requests to the country’s organisers who will finalise the date for the festival.
Preparations will begin with maintenance of the Pululaha cultural centre to improve the electricity, water supply and structure of the venue.
