State of Public Emergency period extended

National Parliament of Solomon Islands

National Parliament this afternoon passed a motion to extend the current State of Public Emergency for another four months.

The motion was moved by the Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare in accordance to section 16 of the constitution.

The motion was passed by an absolute majority.

Forty MPs voted for the motion while 8 were absent.

The current state of public emergency was declared by the Governor General Sir David Vunagi on the 25th of March.

Parliament is adjourned until the 27th of July unless the Speaker recalls it.
