The fourth meeting of the Regional Working Group on Tsunami Warning and Mitigation in the Southwest Pacific concludes in Honiara today.

The meeting opened discussions on ways to improve seismic, sea level networks and data sharing for more timely and accurate detection and monitoring of tsunami threat to countries ways to improve warning delivery and response especially to a local tsunami,tsunami training and capacity building needs of Pacific Island Countries.

Under-Secretary for Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology, Mr. Chanel Iroi said, tsunamis are natural happenings and the best defence against it is an effective Early Warning System that allows people to respond in time to save lives and property damage.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Working Group, Mr. Ofa Fa’anunu of Tonga said, the meeting needs to come up with a list of priorities and actions for implementation in the next two to three years.

This is especially to optimise community response to local tsunami threat being faced by several countries in the region.
