The cost of electricity and issues of electricity pricing remains the largest single overhead cost of private businesses in Honiara.

The Chairman of the 2014 Trade Expo Committee, Redley Raramo said businesses say doing business in Honiara is troublesome because of the costs and unreliability of electricity.

In a statement from the Forum Solomon Islands International, Mr Raramo said one CEO told him according to a recently published electricity tariff – tariffs varies widely from country to country, and may vary significantly from locality to locality within a particularly country.

The CEO also told Mr Raramo reasons for these differences in price could depend on the type and market price of the fuel used; government subsidy; government and industry regulations and even local weather patterns.

“This is to allow its customers know more about services being provided to them by SIEA. Confirming this to me is SIEA’s Officer in Charge at Malu’u Patterson Matai Saeni. He said they have planned to have the awareness talks twice a week.”
