PROTECTION OF FISHERIES CENTRAL TO PACIFIC: CHIEF JUSTICE

Chief Justice Sir Albert Palmer says the protection of our fisheries resources as well as the cordial working relationship and cooperation between our pacific countries is central to the pacific people.

Sir Palmer made this statement in his opening address at the Forum Fisheries Agency and Solomon’s Judicial Seminar at the FFA Conference Centre in Honiara today.

He says the ocean and our fisheries resources have always played a central role for Pacific Islanders in their culture, food security and economic development.

He adds the protection of our fisheries resources is central to our Pacific Islands people, whether in the judiciary or working in fisheries each one has a part to play in ensuring that our fisheries
resources are safeguarded.

The Chief Justice said the cordial working relationship and cooperation between our countries continues to be our strength in protecting our resources.

Meanwhile, Sir Palmer said illegal fishing continues to be a major challenge in our region and threatens the core aspects of cooperation between our countries.

He said it is necessary that all judges are provided with sufficient, admissible evidence that can assist in their work, so that in appropriate cases, where a conviction has been sustained, adequate
penalties can be imposed.
