Female maritime students encourage girls to pursue maritime studies

Two first-year female students at the Solomon Islands National University Maritime College Ranadi campus, are encouraging more young girls to pursue studies in maritime fields.

Ms Tonian Robert and Alesasa Ranina who are both studying basic sea safety, told local media yesterday during the commemoration of International Seafarers Day.

Both believe that although maritime studies are often seen as jobs for men, there is no reason for girls to feel discouraged.

“We want to see more girls to enroll and take up the study here at marine collage, I want to show young girls out there that even girls can do what boys can do,” Ms Tonian Robert said

She hopes to inspire other young women to follow their dreams and take up maritime studies.

“Marine studies can be for everyone. It’s important for girls to know they can join us and succeed.

“My dream is to complete my studies and secure a job on a ship, including opportunities on international vessels. I want to work on ships and see the world outside,” Ms Alesasa Ranina said.

She added. Mir’s call for more female students to enroll in the maritime college highlights the need for equality and balance in the industry.

She believes that with more women in maritime roles, it will open doors for future generations.
