Prime Minister Manele Launches NDS Medium Term Review Report and Supporting Strategic Documents

Honiara, Solomon Islands, Friday 17 October, 2025 –  Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele today launched the National Development Strategy (NDS) 2016–2035 Medium Term Review Report along with four supporting strategic documents at a ceremony held at the Mendana Hotel.

The launch comes as the Solomon Islands approaches its 50th independence anniversary in 2028, marking a moment of reflection on the nation’s progress under the NDS.

Prime Minister Manele noted that while some gains have been achieved, the review paints a mixed picture. Economic growth has been limited by over-reliance on extractive industries, poverty persists, health and education services face significant challenges, environmental degradation continues, and governance systems need strengthening.

“Our economy remains dangerously dependent on logging, mining, and fishing,” the Prime Minister said. “Seventeen percent of our people suffer malnutrition. One doctor serves 4,000 people. Our forests and reefs show the scars of unsustainable practices. These are not just numbers, they are a call to action.”

The Medium Term Review identifies key lessons and sets strategic priorities across five objectives: sustained and inclusive economic growth, poverty alleviation and equitable development, health and education excellence, environmental sustainability and disaster resilience, and governance, unity, and public order.

Prime Minister Manele emphasized the importance of taking responsibility and acting decisively. “We must diversify our economy, strengthen food and water systems, invest in health and education, empower communities to protect the environment, and deliver public services with efficiency and integrity,” he said.

  3. The Solomon Islands National Monitoring and Evaluation Systems Strengthening Strategy 2024-2028 and,
  4. The Ministry of National Planning and Development Coordination Corporate Plan 2025-2027.

The Prime Minister called on all Solomon Islanders, development partners, the private sector, civil society, and faith-based organizations to play their part in turning recommendations into action.

With the NDS review and supporting documents now launched, the Prime Minister said it is time for the nation to act with courage and conviction to secure a prosperous future for Solomon Islands.
