Agriculture Extension officers have been called on to be watchful and resourceful in their dealings with rural farmers.

With agriculture accounting for the livelihood and food security of more than 80 per cent of the population living in rural areas, this is critical.

Guadalcanal Province Agriculture Extension Services Director Michael Ho’ota highlighted the important role played by Agriculture extension officers at a recent Agriculture Conference.

Agrikalsa Nius reported Mr. Ho’ota as saying Agriculture extension has a major and vital role in stimulating and instigating agricultural development in the rural areas.

Ho’ota told participants, extension officers must be on the look out for opportunities and formulate sustainable initiatives to empower rural people’s livelihoods and food security.

He adds, their focus must be targeted towards assisting the 80 per cent of rural population become active participants in agriculture developments suitable for their area.

The conference reviewed activities in 2013 and drew up the work-plan for 2014.
