Banana trees in North Guadalcanal are reportedly producing less fruit and, farmers in the area say, they want the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to assess the situation.

SIBC’s Stringer in North Guadalcanal Duddley Gani reports, the farmers believe the situation was caused by the recent flash floods.

“Banana farmers in North Guadalcanal are calling on the Ministry of Agriculture’s research division to send officers to assess why has there been irregular banana tree development existed after the recent flash floods.”

Gani also reports, banana is a popular cash crop in North Guadalcanal and farmers say they are losing a major source of income.

“This has become a major concern for the farmers because banana is their staple food, with this happening for the first time.”
