The Kirakira Central Market in Makira Ulawa Province has been demolished because of its deteriorating state.

Salinda Maka’a, a journalism student studying at the Solomon Islands National University reports from Kirakira.

“The Kirakira Central Market right now has been demolished under the authority of the Provincial Government due to its deteriorating status, which became dangerous for its daily users.”

Salinda also reports, because of disputes at the site, the Makira Provincial Government has not made a clear decision on whether or not to redevelop the market.

“The development progress of the market itself is uncertain, whether it is achievable or not because the land on which the market is located is still under land dispute by those who claim its ownership.”
