Four unmasked men armed with bush knives stormed Westpac’s main branch and robbed almost $4 million in broad daylight this morning.

The Police Commissioner Frank Prendergast says the culprits walked into the bank, robbed two money boxes containing approximately $4 million and chopped off the left hand of a security officer on duty before escaping.

Commissioner Prendergast says a waiting car escaped with the thugs  towards Kakabona before being apprehended.

“Four men then left the scene, they were identified by a police vehicle near the Town ground round about and following a pursuit they were apprehended in Kakabona with three of men intercepted and arrested in Kakabona with the assistance of the community. One man escaped and is currently being looked for by police.”

SIBC News was at the Central Police station and witnessed when police came in with one of the arrested suspects.

Meanwhile, the Westpac security officer was rushed to the hospital immediately after the robbers escaped.

Westpac bank reopened for business after police detectives completed their investigations before lunch hour today.
