Government received Petition from Malaitians in Honiara

The Democratic Coalition Government for Advancement (DCGA) has received a petition from a group that referred to themselves as Malaitans in Honiara this afternoon.

Special Secretary to the Prime Minister Albert Kabui received the petition on behalf of the government at the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

A government statement confirmed, Spokesperson for the group, Mr. Lawrence Makili said he appreciated the opportunity to meet with and deliver the petition to the Government.

It said the petition also includes requests that are directed to the Prime Minister and DCGA.

These include, lifting total ban of sea cucumber harvesting for the Malaita Outer Islanders livelihood, and for the government to immediately address mitigating measures to counter the desperate Climate Change situation affecting people in the Malaita Outer Islands.

Speaking after receiving the petition, Mr Kabui acknowledged the importance of dialogue.

He also expressed concerns for the recent public gathering that caused negative impacts such as the closure of schools including unnecessary panic.

He assured the group of the government’s response after looking through the petition to determine how the issues can be addressed.

The DCGA fully encourages and supports freedom of expression in the interest of national stability, good governance, peace and progress but must also have regard for due process and laws of the country.
