Governor-General urges citizens not to rely on MP cash handouts

By Alfred Pagepitu

The Governor-General, His Excellency Reverend David Kapu has called on citizens in the country not to rely on members of parliament for cash handouts.

The Governor-General made the call in his speech from the throne in parliament on Monday.

His Excellency Kapu said dependency mentality poses challenges to the society.

“Our people should not be overly reliant on Members of Parliament to provide cash handouts for their daily needs,” he said.

Kapu added that the prevailing reliance on handouts continues to perpetuate a sense of entitlement within society.

He noted that individuals often expect their Members of Parliament to fulfill their requests, shaping their perception of government performance based on personal benefits rather than the delivery of public service.

“This dependency mentality poses significant challenges, and it is crucial that we address this attitude promptly,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Governor General ended his message with the quote “We must till the soil and toil to live to earn a living”.

“Genesis chapter 3 verses 19 also state that I quote, by the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
