Teachers from schools in Honiara and Guadalcanal gathered today to commemorate World Teachers’ Day in Honiara.
Celebrated under the theme “The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers’ Recognition,” the event aimed to highlight the crucial role of teachers in the country.
Speaking at the event, the Minister for Education and Human Resources, Hon. Tozen Leokana, emphasized the significance of the day, stating it was dedicated to honoring the teaching profession, which he described as the bedrock of all other professions in the country.
Leokana described the day as one of gratitude and reflection, acknowledging the sacrifices, commitment, and inspiration provided by teachers who guide present and future generations.
He noted that while the global theme this year is “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,” the Solomon Islands chose a theme that directly addresses the core of its education system: “The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers’ Recognition.”
He added that collaboration and recognition are the two essential pillars upon which the future of education in the nation is built.
Minister Leokana also highlighted the foundational role teachers play in shaping doctors, engineers, judges, scientists, entrepreneurs, and leaders of all kinds.
On challenges faced by teachers, the Minister assured that the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, with the support of its partners, is committed to providing the necessary resources to address the challenges.
He said the government through the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, continues to work closely with SINTA and key education stakeholders to improve teacher employment conditions, expand training opportunities, and strengthen support systems for effective teaching.
