The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology and Chairman of the National Disaster Council, Dr Melchior Mataki, says the immediate focus of the government is on stabilizing the immediate impacts of last week’s flash floods to our people.

Dr Mataki says infrastructure and restoring public utilities especially clean water to the residents of Honiara and Guadalcanal is vital.

He adds, long term reconstruction both in terms of private and public infrastructures to reduce the chances of encountering such disaster impacts in the future must also be addressed.

Dr Mataki says the National Disaster Council acknowledges the assistance and contributions received from development partners and the direct assistance of international
non-government organizations and local ones including the churches, private sector and the public to the efforts by the Solomon Islands Government to respond to the national disaster.
