A 60-meter litter boom to trap marine debris and wastes will be installed across the Mataniko river in Honiara tomorrow.

The litter boom is part of a pilot project from the Ministry of Environment in Collaboration with the Secretariat of the PacificRegional Environment Program SPREP to analyse and decrease land-based sources of marine debris in Solomon Islands.

SPREP Pollution Management Assistant Kelsey Richardson says waste collection and analysis will be conducted twice a week from the litter boom to find ways of reducing waste along the river.

Meanwhile, Speaking during the project opening this week, Under Secretary for the Ministry of Environment Channel Iroi said the project is a timely initiative by SPREP to address river pollution in Solomon Islands.
