
Major progress achieved on new KiraKira wharf
Construction of the new KiraKira Wharf is progressing well, with works now at an advanced stage.
Implemented under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), this Solomon Islands Government project, with assistance from the Asian Development Bank, represents a significant investment in strengthening maritime infrastructure in Makira-Ulawa Province.
The main wharf structure remains on schedule and is targeted for completion by mid-2026. Works on the Passenger Terminal Building are expected to commence in the near future and will run in parallel with the remaining construction activities finishing off works will include kerbs/fencing and lighting (for both operation & safety) together with improvements to the access road.
Last week, a joint team comprising officers from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) and the LMCP travelled to KiraKira to witness ongoing construction activities and assess progress on the ground.

During the visit, the team also met with the Makira-Ulawa Provincial Premier and members of the provincial executive to discuss the project’s status and its anticipated benefits for the province.
Makira-Ulawa Premier Hon. Stanley Siapu welcomed the visit and acknowledged the progress made.
“We are encouraged by the steady progress of the new KiraKira Wharf. This project is critically important for Makira-Ulawa Province, as it will significantly improve maritime access, strengthen trade and transportation, and support essential services. Reliable wharf infrastructure is fundamental to our province’s economic and social development.”

He further emphasized the broader impact of the development.
“For many of our communities, sea transport is the primary link to markets, healthcare, education, and government services.
“The new wharf will enhance safety, efficiency, and accessibility, ultimately improving the daily lives of our people.”
Once completed, the new wharf will provide safer, more reliable, and more efficient access for passenger vessels and cargo ships.
The Passenger Terminal Building will further improve the travel experience by offering sheltered waiting areas, improved boarding facilities, and enhanced passenger services.
The Permanent Secretary of MID reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to delivering critical infrastructure through the LMCP.
“The Government remains committed to investing in infrastructure that strengthens connectivity and supports inclusive development.
“The new KiraKira Wharf is a key project under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project, designed to improve maritime safety, reliability, and efficiency while supporting economic opportunities in Makira-Ulawa Province,” the Permanent Secretary stated.
Construction activities will continue over the coming months as the project steadily advances toward its completion targets.
