New PEC Chair pays courtesy call on Prime Minister Manele

The newly appointed Chairman of the Parliamentary Entitlements Commission (PEC), Mr. Nigel Maezama, today paid a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele marking his first formal engagement with the Head of Government since his appointment.

The meeting provided an opportunity for Prime Minister Manele to be formally introduced to the new PEC Chair and members of the Commission, the body responsible for overseeing and determining parliamentary entitlements. 

During the courtesy call, Chairman Maezama expressed his sincere appreciation to Prime Minister Manele and the Government for the trust and confidence placed in him and the Commissioners. 

He reaffirmed the PEC’s constitutional mandate and highlighted the Commission’s responsibility to carefully balance the entitlements of parliamentarians and other constitutional office-holders with the broader economic and fiscal realities of the nation.

Chairman Maezama briefed the Prime Minister on the number of pending cases currently before the Commission, noting the Commission’s obligation to address these thoroughly and responsibly.

He emphasized the PEC’s determination to urgently clear all outstanding submissions and restore timely and efficient processing of entitlements.

Prime Minister Manele congratulated Chairman Maezama and the Commissioners on their appointments.

The Prime Minister expressed full confidence in their collective expertise drawn from both the public and private sectors. 

He noted that the PEC’s role is of critical national importance, with decisions that directly affect members of parliament as well as other constitutional post holders such as Provincial and City Council members and uphold the integrity and functioning of the Constitution.

The Prime Minister also reminded the Commission of the importance of maintaining a consistent PEC meeting schedule to ensure continuity, transparency, and effective delivery of its mandate. 

PEC members include Nigel Maezama (Chair), Nanette Tutua, Lawrence Hunumeme the current Minister of Finance, Hon. Rex Ramofafia, current Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee Hon. Gordon Darcy Lilo. Derrick Vagi is PEC’s Secretary.
