The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) are investigating the death of a female deceased discovered at the Mataniko River this morning.
The deceased was discovered floating in the river early in the morning.
A local resident residing along the river and a witness at the scene told SIBC News that the body was discovered between 7 and 8 am.
“This is the first time we have encountered such an incident, and we alerted nearby villagers about the discovery.”
“We quickly called the police to collect the body, which appeared to be that of a female,” he said.
RSIPF officers attended the scene and removed the body out of the water.
An autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.
In a statement earlier today, the RSIPF confirmed that the case remains under investigation and are calling on the public to assist with information that will assist their investigation.
The public have also been urged to call in at the National Referral Hospital morgue to identify the deceased.
