The Solomon Islands Maritime Authority (SIMA) launched three of its key national plans in Honiara today.
The national plans were launched during the 6th SIMA workshop held under the theme “Aligning National Maritime Policies to Strengthen Regional Sustainability in Pacific Shipping”.
The plans are; the National Search and Rescue Plan, the Solomon Islands National Marine Spill Contingency Plan, and the Solomon Islands Plan for a Sustainable Maritime Future.
In his keynote address, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development Permanent Secretary, Allan Lilia said the government is committed to addressing critical maritime issues.

“The government is committed to addressing issues such as maritime safety, marine pollution prevention and response, and reducing maritime greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.
In 2024, the government launched the Maritime Labor Mobility and Shipping Registry Roadmap as part of its plan to create more job opportunities in the maritime and fishing industries.
SIMA Director Thierry Nervale said ongoing workshops are part of SIMA’s strategy to engage with shipping operators and the broader maritime community.
“Since the establishment of SIMA in 2021, it’s been part of our strategy to engage with the private sector, ship operators, and seafarers.
“We often talk about seafarers’ employment and safety standards on vessels, and now we’re moving into the safety of navigation,” he said.
He added that SIMA will incorporate feedback from the workshop into their plans to ensure shipping operators understand the reforms in place and the future direction of the maritime sector.
