SINU and ANU forge landmark research partnership

The national universities of Solomon Islands and Australia have signed a landmark agreement to deepen academic collaboration, foster research partnerships, and enhance capacity building.

Leaders from Solomon Islands National University (SINU) and Australian National University (ANU) signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) following the successful conclusion of the inaugural Panatina Research Seminar, held on 3 November 2025 at SINU’s Panatina Campus in Honiara.

Funded by the Australian Government through the Pacific Research and Australia Awards programs, the seminar brought together scholars, leaders, students, and community representatives to address the Solomon Islands’ most pressing development challenges, including climate change, education, governance and social transformation.

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele emphasised the crucial link between research and effective governance.

“I welcome the partnership between SINU and the Australian National University on this seminar series focused on sustainable and inclusive development,” PM Manele said.

“More importantly, the outcomes of the research presented through this collaboration will help inform and underpin the government’s policies and development priorities.”

The Prime Minister encouraged academia to explore inclusive and sustainable development from diverse perspectives and to develop innovative solutions for policymakers.

The new MOU solidifies a long-term partnership that will facilitate joint research initiatives, academic exchanges, and institutional development. It will also support SINU’s efforts to strengthen its academic profile and enhance its global university branding.

The Acting Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Mr Andrew Schloeffel, commended both universities for their commitment to advancing research and innovation that benefits Pacific Islands communities.

“Our nations are working together in a strong and mutually beneficial partnership, and from today our national universities will be too,” Mr. Schloeffel said.

“This MOU reflects our shared vision to advance Pacific-led knowledge and regional development through equitable and respectful collaboration.”

SINU Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Transform Aqorau, reaffirmed SINU’s commitment to deepening collaboration with ANU.

“We are excited to continue strengthening the bond between ANU and SINU. This MOU marks the beginning of a long and fruitful partnership that will help shape the future of research and higher education in the Solomon Islands,” Dr. Aqorau said.

Dr. Aqorau also announced that the Panatina Research Seminar will become an annual event, providing a sustainable platform for Pacific-led research and knowledge sharing. Future efforts will focus on translating research insights into practical solutions that inform government policy.
