A four days National Workshop on Tsunami Warning and Emergency Response on using the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center’s (PTWC) enhanced products for National Tsunami Threat Decision-Making begins in Honiara today.

The workshop brought together government officials and Provincial Disaster Offices around the country to learn from international experts and presenters on how to use  PTCW products.

It aims to increase the capacity of first responder operational staff to efficiently and effectively respond to Tsunamis.

Under Secretary for Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology Shanel Iroi said earthquakes and Tsunami’s are common events in Solomon Islands that impacted negatively on the social and economic development of the country.

Mr. Iroi said the workshop is an opportunity to learn from latest information and product development from international partners which will assist in our preparedness and response to natural calamities.

The workshop covers Tsunami warning operations and the use of PTWC enhanced products, specific attention on warning and emergency response plans and standard operating procedures (SOPs) in Solomon Islands.
