Honiara traffic offences mounting

Early morning traffic jam in Honiara.

Police have arrested and charged 19 people for having high alcohol presence in their blood.

Police confirmed the 19 people were apprehended during a recent operation conducted by the Traffic department early this month.

Supervising Director of Kukum Traffic Police, Inspector Brian Surimalefo said 590 vehicles were checked by his officers during the operation.

Of this total, Inspector Surimalefo said 19 people had alcohol presence in their blood over the legal limit saying they had been charged and released on bail to appear in Court at a later date.

He adds, three drivers were also charged for driving unlicensed vehicles and released on principle bail to appear in Court at a later date.

Mr Surimalefo said they had also discovered three other vehicles involving in accidents at different times and locations around Honiara.

He said the traffic operation would continue at anytime to ensure safer roads for all.

Inspector Surimalefo appealed to all drivers and vehicle owners to always observe traffic rules when driving.
