HCC continues demolishing operations amidst ongoing illegal houses

The Honiara City Council (HCC) and the Police Response Unit officers, have intensified operations to demolish illegal structures (houses) behind the Multi-Purpose Hall and the University of the South Pacific Centre, in which the land HCC owns.

The demolishing operation occurred on the 3rd of April 2025.

This initiative is part of the Council’s ongoing efforts to enforce local building regulations and maintain order within the city.

HCC Law Enforcement Director, Mr. Robert Madeo, expressed his regret for those affected by the demolitions, particularly families whose homes have been dismantled.

“Unfortunately, some have lost their houses.

“However, we must enforce the Honiara City Council Building Ordinance, which categorizes these structures and settlements as illegal,” Mr. Madeo stated.

The operation aims to uphold the integrity of city planning and public safety standards, which are vital for the community’s well-being and sustainable development.

Mr. Madeo emphasized the importance of adhering to legal building practices to prevent further homelessness and disputes.

As the Council proceeds with these actions, it urges residents to comply with existing regulations and engage in dialogue about appropriate housing solutions.

HCC remains committed to fostering a safe and well-organized urban environment for all citizens.
