Australia supports mining sector governance in Solomon Islands

Australia is making commitments for the long term, under the Solomon Islands –Australia Partnership.

Australia’s Minister for Pacific Island Affairs, The Hon Pat Conroy MP, announced a SBD1.6 million package to support improved governance of the mining sector in Solomon Islands.

This support will enable the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification (MMERE) to increase its mine site inspections and material testing.

This funding will help ensure the Solomon Islands Government and landholders get their fair share of revenue from the growing sector.

Australia’s funding will also support MMERE to enhance its existing compliance framework and implement a training and development program for staff.

Speaking with Minister for Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification, Hon Derrick Manu’ari, Minister Conroy reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to working with Solomon Islands to support economic growth and develop export opportunities.

“Australia is committed to supporting Solomon Islands to manage its mineral wealth sustainably and realise economic opportunities. Managing the sector well will support job creation, boost exports and ensure benefits are kept in Solomon Islands and shared with communities,” Minister Conroy said.

This support highlights Solomon Islands and Australia’s shared commitment to economic development.
