DPM Kologeto warns against disrespectful social media misbehavior

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communication and Aviation, Hon. Frederick Kologeto, is warning against rising disrespectful misbehavior on social media by certain users, which has the potential to create disharmony in communities.

His warning stems from recent social media commentaries relating to recent controversies surrounding the current Solomon Cup soccer tournament.

Hon. Kologeto also confirmed that police are now investigating a widely circulated post containing offensive and abusive language, to authenticate its source and take relevant action.

“Such unacceptable online behavior must not be tolerated, as it has the potential to destabilize peace and unity in the community,” Kologeto warned.

“With the mandatory registration of SIM cards now in place, it is no longer difficult for law enforcement agencies to do their job — provided the right support is given by stakeholders,” he said.

Kologeto said the Solomon Cup soccer tournament was established to bring Solomon Islanders together through football, and not an avenue to create division and ethnic or regional hatred through the use of social media platforms such as Facebook.

“While social media platforms provide important space for information sharing and connection, they must not be used as avenues to insult, belittle, or attack others,” he said.

He called on all Solomon Islanders, especially young people, to uphold values of respect, kindness, and unity when engaging in public discussions.

“Our words matter. What we say online has real-life impacts. We must remember that behind every screen is a human being — someone’s brother, sister, parent or friend,” he added.

Hon. Kologeto encouraged the public to use social media responsibly and constructively, and to set a positive example for the next generation.

He said it is the shared responsibility of everyone — leaders, parents, educators, and users themselves — to foster a more positive and respectful online environment in Solomon Islands.
