Police arrest 11 suspects for disturbing Bina harbor project meeting

Auki police and a team from the Police Response Department (PRD) have arrested 11 suspects for disturbing the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Bina Harbor project meeting recently in Malaita province.

It was alleged that suspects armed with weapons caused disturbance and threatened people closely involved in the Bina Harbor project, which caused fear during the AGM facilitated by the Bina Harbor Project and the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR).

Supervising Provincial Police Commander (PPC) of Malaita Province, Superintendent Michael Ramosaea, says, “The suspects have been doing the illegal acts ever since the project started a few years ago.”

Superintendent Ramosaea said, “During the recent AGM, the suspects disturbed and threatened the attendees of the meeting.”

PPC Ramosaea said the suspects had been charged for unlawful assembly contrary to section 74 of the Penal Code, an additional charge for going armed in public contrary to section 83 of the Penal Code, possession of weapons contrary to section 84 of the Penal Code, and intimidation contrary to section 231 of the Penal Code.

Mr. Ramosaea said the suspects appeared before Auki Magistrates’ Court and were all remanded for two weeks to appear in court on a later date. Applauded the support of the community leaders and officers who took part in the successful operations.

He appealed to the chiefs, church leaders, and land-owning groups of the Bina area to work together to support this national project, which will certainly benefit Malaita province and the country as a whole.
