Student calls for joint efforts in protecting the environment

A form six male student from Honiara Senior High school has raised the need for Solomon Islands to protect its environment from risks associated with carbon emissions.

Mr Lawrence Fisi who took part in his school’s speech contest on Wednesday talked about the environment and carbon emissions in his speech.

He said Solomon Islands have rich rainforests and coral reefs that need to be protected.

“Today I speak not just as a student or a science lover but as a proud Solomon Islander. As a son of this Island, I feel a deep connection to our forest, our reefs and the sea breeze that whispers through our coconut trees.

“I want to talk to you about the significance of protecting the environment and minimizing carbon emission in our beloved country.” 

 He said carbon emission was not just a global issue but is now putting the country’s at risk.

“Imagine having to abandon your land, your culture, your graves because the ocean is swallowing you. 

“Our coral reefs are bleaching, our forests are being logged unsustainable, our rivers are polluted and the weather is becoming more unpredictable.

“Floods, drought and cyclones are becoming our new normal,” he said.

He called on all Solomon islander to unite in protecting the environment from the risk associated with carbon emission.

“We must educate and raise awareness. Talk to your family, your village elders, your church groups, let them know what is happening and how we can help,” he concluded. 

A total of 13 talented school students took part in the speech competition with the theme, “Empowering today’s voices for a better future”.
