Commonwealth observers, led by a former PNG Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta, move into position today in seven of Solomon Islands nine provinces in preparation for Wednesday’s elections. The Group flew into the country last week and their deployment began yesterday. Media adviser to the Group, Julius Mucunguzi says, Commonwealth observers are now in different locations in the country. Mr Mucunguzi says the observers are ready to witness and observe the polling processes – the counting and tabulation – all of which forms part of their mandate to report about how the process will have gone. He says, in the course of last week, the observers received briefings from stakeholders to get a sense of the issues and context within which these elections are being held. SIBC News understands more that 4-hundred candidates are contesting the 50 seats in the parliament.
