Malaita Province has outlined a plan to develop a small livestock industry focused on sheep and dairy goat.

The proposal is listed in the Province’s 4-year Agriculture and Rural Policy framework which expires in 2017.

Malaita Premier Edwin Suibaea had presented the framework to the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock in Honiara earlier this year.

The Agrikalsa Nius reports, the Minister for Agriculture and Livestock David Tome praises the province for its initiative.

Minister Tome said while it is still too early to commit any Government resource through the Ministry, he applauds the forward looking plans and aspirations to take the agriculture sector to newer heights.

He however made the assurance he will take this matter to his Ministry’s executive level for further discussions.

Last year, members of Malaita’s Provincial Government took part in a technical mission to Fiji where they visited sheep and dairy goat farms.
