‘Too many are dying on our roads’: Solomons Police

Traffic on Mendana Avenue

Road traffic is a leading cause of death and disability in the country, according to Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Deputy Commissioner Operations Gabriel Manelusi.

Police report at least eleven people were killed and nearly 500 seriously injured on national roads last year.

Police and representatives from government ministries discussed these road safety issues at a consultation on the development of a National Road Safety Action Plan yesterday.

The consultation aimed to prioritise actions for road safety and determine how to finalise and adopt the action plan.

Mr Manelusi said this was the third consultation in the development of the national action plan, which should be aligned with the sustainable development goals and police Crime Prevention Strategy.

He said saving lives on the roads requires engagement from citizens and different sectors of the government.
