The National Parliament today elected Hon. Morris Toiraena, Member of Parliament for East Honiara Constituency as the new deputy speaker of parliament.

Toiraena was the only candidate nominated for the position after the closure of nominations at 4 pm Sunday, May 11th, 2025.

Toiraena therefore stands unopposed.

Clerk to Parliament, Jefferson Halu, officially announced Toiraena as the new Deputy Speaker when Parliament resumed sitting this morning.

Toiraena was nominated by the Member for Gizo/Kolombangara Constituency, who is also the Minister for Police, National Security, and Correctional Services, Hon. Jimson Tanangada.

Halu was satisfied that the Member of Parliament for East Honiara Constituency is eligible to be elected as Deputy Speaker under Section 64 of the Constitution.

“I am also satisfied that the only nomination received met the requirements of paragraphs 2 and 3 of Order 5 of the Standing Orders of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands and is valid.

“I am honored to declare the Member for East Honiara as the Deputy Speaker,” Halu announced.

Speaking after his appointment, Toiraena said he was honored and humbled by the announcement that was made.

“I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Speaker, the Hon. Prime Minister, Hon. Cabinet Members, and the Members of Parliament of the 12th Parliament.

“Thank you very much for the trust and confidence that you have placed in me by electing me as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

“This is a new duty, a new responsibility, and I know it hand in hand.

“I am ready to embrace the challenge ahead. And with your continued support and cooperation, I am confident that I can carry out this solemn responsibility with dedication, love, and commitment to serve you, Parliament Members, and the people of the Solomon Islands in this Honorable House,” he said.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Mathew Wale, also joined other MPs in congratulating the Member for East Honiara for his successful ascension to the Deputy Speakership.

The Deputy Speaker’s post became vacant following the appointment of the former holder, Hon. Cathy Nori, who is now the Minister of Women, Youth, Children, and Family Affairs.
