Seafarers in Solomon Islands were honored for their service in the shipping industry during the commemoration and celebration of the International Day of the Seafarers at the Solomon Islands Maritime College, Ranadi Campus, East Honiara.
Celebrated under the theme “My Harassment-Free Ship,” the event brought together seafarers, government officials and key stakeholders from the shipping industry in the country.
In his keynote address, Hon. Rick Fuo’o, Minister for Infrastructure and Development, commended the work of seafarers in the country.
He said he was honored to attend the event and particularly pleased to see female seafarers represented, noting their important contribution to the industry.
“We honor you. We support you. You are the lifeblood of our domestic and global supply chains. You are ambassadors of our nation.
“And you deserve ships that are not only seaworthy, but also free from fear, disrespect and harm,” Hon. Fuo’o said.
Emphasizing the event’s theme, he added that every ship can and must be a harassment-free workplace.
“Let us work together—government, industry, institutions, families—to create a maritime sector that upholds the dignity and humanity of every seafarer, Hon. Fuo’o added.
Seafarers work long days and lonely nights, often around the clock without notice.
On this commemoration day, the Government of Solomon Islands recognized them for their essential service to the shipping industry.
International Day of the Seafarers falls annually on 25 June.
