STRENGTHENING PACIFIC FARMERS – TOGETHER IN HONIARA

By Mary Idu Burumaea

The Pacific Farmer Organizations (PFO) and Kastom Garden Association (KGA) are counting down for a  week of learning, sharing and celebrating Pacific agriculture, in Honiara.

These activities are part of the Pacific Breadfruit Project, a global initiative focused on promoting the sustainable cultivation, processing, and market development of breadfruit in the Pacific Islands.

The learning and planning, and the Annual General event will run from the 18th to the 22nd  of August 2025, bringing together farm leaders, experts and partners from across the Pacific.

It will see  farmer-to-farmer learning and innovation sharing, policy and advocacy workshops and field visits on floriculture, fruits, breadfruit and value adding.

In an interview with SIBC News, Kastom Garden Association Operation Officer,  Jodi Kama said  there will be an insightful conversation on the future of “breadfruit in the Solomon Islands and across the Pacific” which will be hosted on the  20th of August 2025.

“We will be inviting representatives from the ministry of agriculture, non- government organization, government stakeholders and other representatives from other pacific islands, to attend the event.”

“The Pacific Breadfruit Project is an event about farmer-led solutions to climate change and sustainable food systems,” she said.

Mrs. Kama also calls on the public to join the program and learn more about climate resilience and food security.

“The event will help farmers gain more information on which food can sustain us during climate disaster, what benefits we can expect from  preserved  foods, and how it generates economic income for farmers around the pacific.”

” It is a must-attend for farmers, entrepreneurs, investors, students, and government partners interested in food security, sustainable agriculture, and economic growth,” Kama stated.

The Pacific Breadfruit Project is part of the Farmer Organizations Leading Research and Innovation on Agroecology (FO-RI) program, and is implemented by the Pacific Farmer Organizations (PFO).

Meanwhile, KGA is partnering in hosting the event as it is  a pioneer of food security and farmer education in Solomon Islands, empowering communities through seed saving, agroecology, and local food production.
